Electricity is a vital part of our everyday lives. It provides convenience, safety, comfort and
entertainment. It powers our homes, and businesses.
Electricity cannot be stored or saved. It must be constantly produced and transported to be available
at the instant you flip a switch.
Duquesne Light uses more than 45,000 miles of overhead lines, 250,000 utility poles and 103,000
transformers to bring power to your homes and businesses. In this section,
Fundamentals of Electricity explains how power plants produce electricity
and introduces you to the extensive electric utility infrastructure we use to deliver reliable power.
Even though we depend on electricity every day, we cannot see it, hear it, or feel it. Its invisible
and easy to take for granted. When used properly, electricity is safe. But a moment of carelessness can
result in a serious accident. We encourage you to spend some time reviewing the safety tips found in
the Electrical Safety section. Here you will find information on
Indoor Electrical Safety,
Outdoor Electrical Safety,
Lighting Safety and
Generator Safety.
Weve also provided a glossary of common
Electric Utility Terms for your reference, along
with a Map of Duquesne Lights Service Area for your use.
