In some neighborhoods, electrical lines are placed underground. Underground power lines have thick
installation and National Codes dictate the depth at which they are buried. Some low voltage underground
circuits could be as shallow as 18 inches, while most higher voltage circuits are placed deeper then 24
inches.
Underground power lines are generally buried deep enough for planting small shrubs and flowers. However,
before planting trees, shrubs or installing other landscaping, you need to identify where all underground
utility lines are located. Before you dig, place a call at least 3 working days in advance to Pennsylvania
One Call at 1-800-242-1776 for help in identifying underground lines. There is no charge for this service

In areas served by underground power lines, large steel boxes containing transformers are located on pads
at ground level around the neighborhood. While these high voltage transformers are safe when they are securely
closed and locked, it is best to maintain a safe distance when planting any shrubs or plants. Always keep
children away from all electrical equipment.
