Overhead Power Lines
Duquesne Light uses more than 45,000 miles of overhead power lines to provide electricity to customers. Overhead power lines are not insulated and will energize anything that comes in contact with them. These lines are placed at the highest points on utility pole to prevent contact withpeople and tall objects.

Always keep a safe distance from any downed power line. Never touch or try to move a power line that has fallen. Don’t drive over downed power lines. If a downed line is near water, keep a safe distance from the line and the water, even if it is a little puddle.

If a power line falls across a vehicle that you are in, stay in the vehicle until help arrives. It is a myth that the rubber tires protect you. The metal of the vehicle conducts electricity all around you. If you must get out of the vehicle, jump from it making sure that no part of your body is touching the vehicle when your feet touch the ground. If you touch the vehicle and the ground at the same time, you could be electrocuted. Try to land on both feet and shuffle or hop away from the area with your feet together to minimize the path of electric current and avoid electric shock.
