The Duquesne Light Black History Month Celebration provides an opportunity to
reward the unsung leaders who make an impact and help advance the African
American community. It also helps counteract the negative portrayal of area
youth by shining a light on young adults who work hard at school and make
significant contributions to their communities.
Academic achievement, community involvement, an interest in pursuing careers that
require training beyond high school graduation, and financial need are the primary
selection criteria for the Duquesne Light/WQED scholarship awards. The winner can
use the $5,000 scholarship for advanced study at any accredited four-year
university, college, community college, or technical training school.
The African-American Leadership Awards are granted to outstanding individuals or
groups (winners need not be of African-American heritage) who promote and
contribute to the advancement of African Americans, are dedicated to the
betterment of the community as a whole, and who pursue excellence in his/her/their
field. The awards recognize achievement in the categories of Arts, Culture and
Recreation; Civic, Community and Humanitarian; Business; and Education.
