Duquesne Light Volunteers Carry On Tradition of Caring by Helping with Flood Repairs

More than 30 employee volunteers and family members assisted local flood victims on May 21 as part of a Duquesne Light community service day. The volunteers spent the day helping nonprofit Hosanna Industries refurbish homes in Bridgeville and Ross Township that were damaged in the September flooding caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ivan.

"I would like to thank the volunteers for once again showing the region that Duquesne Light cares about its neighbors," said Maureen Hogel, chief legal and administrative officer. "Each one of these employees gave up a beautiful Saturday to help those less fortunate. In some cases, volunteers stayed longer than they were expected to continue their work. It was a true example of Duquesne Light employees carrying on a long tradition of community involvement."

Saturday’s community service day was the latest in a series of efforts by Duquesne Light to assist Hurricane Ivan flood victims. Employees labored around the clock for several days to restore power following the September floods. Shortly after the flooding, employees volunteered time in neighborhoods and relief centers to assist clean-up efforts. The company also donated $100,000 toward Allegheny County's Hurricane Ivan Home Relief Program and leveraged its Pittsburgh Home & Garden Show sponsorship to generate an additional $15,000 in monetary and material donations from show attendees and sponsors. In addition, Duquesne Light is providing 10 businesses in Carnegie with $2,500 grants for use in replacing damaged business equipment.
