Duquesne Light

Celebrating Light Up Night 2006

Duquesne Light helped Pittsburgh celebrate its 47th Light Up Night on Friday, Nov. 17. For the seventh year in a row, Duquesne Light served as sponsor of the traditional kickoff to the region's holiday season. City officials estimated that the turnout for Light Up Night was one of the largest in years.

Market Square was a hub of activity throughout the evening. Duquesne Light employee volunteers gave away nearly 22,000 of the company's signature glow sticks to Light Up Night revelers. Visitors to Market Square also enjoyed live music, street performers and food vendors.

The large crowds in Market Square and throughout the downtown area converged on Commonwealth Place for the grand finale at 9 p.m. The winner of Duquesne Light's Light Up Night Sweepstakes – seven-year-old Amanda Turnbull of New Brighton – flipped a giant light switch, setting off a spectacular fireworks display and illuminating the company's 80-foot "Tree of Lights" at Point State Park. Joining Amanda on the stage for the tree-lighting ceremony were Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and Morgan O'Brien, Duquesne Light president and chief executive officer.

Duquesne Light received more than 1,000 entries for the Light Up Night Sweepstakes – open to children ages 6-12. Amanda and her family also received a prize package, featuring a $300 Macy's gift certificate, dinner and an overnight stay at the Omni William Penn Hotel, four tickets to Pittsburgh CLO's "A Musical Christmas Carol" and four "First Night" admission buttons.

Featuring more than 5,300 multi-colored lights, Duquesne Light's Tree of Lights will sparkle at night throughout the holiday season. The company also illuminates the Mellon Square animated display and snowflakes along city streets.
