Power of Warmth
In 2005, Duquesne Light joined with Operation Warm, a Pennsylvania-based nonprofit that
helps build the self-esteem of children by providing them with new winter coats, to
launch our Power of Warmth campaign. The company’s sponsorship provided nearly 1,500
coats, the equivalent of one for every Duquesne Light employee, to local nonprofits for
distribution to needy children throughout Allegheny and Beaver counties. The initiative
included participation by company employees in a special distribution event staged at
Penn State Beaver Campus in Beaver County, and company volunteers also joined other local
corporations to treat a group of elementary school students from Allegheny County to a
morning of fun at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, where they also received their new
winter coats.
Women and Girls of Distinction Awards
For many years, the Girls Scouts – Trillium Council has honored girls and women who have
demonstrated extraordinary achievement or leadership in various award categories. Each
of these girls and women receive public recognition at the annual
Women and Girls of
Distinction award reception. Duquesne Light has supported this event for many years,
and serves as sponsor of the award for Math, Technology and the Sciences.
Pittsburgh Race for the Cure
Each year, Duquesne Light fields a team of more that 250 employees, friends and family
members to participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, an annual Mother’s Day
event to fund research leading to a cure for breast cancer. In addition to serving as
a corporate sponsor, the company also underwrites the registration fees for the employees
who participate in the event.
UsToo! 5K/10K Race for Prostate Cancer Awareness
Every year, nearly 250,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer. In 2005, Duquesne
Light employees joined in the fight to increase awareness and early detection of this
disease. Company volunteers gave up part of their Father’s Day to volunteer at the
UsToo! 5K/10K Race for Prostate Cancer Awareness event, which raises funds to help
defray the cost of prostate cancer screenings and provide support groups for those
diagnosed with the disease.
